Cities of the Biblical World: An Introduction to the Archaeology, Geography, and History of Biblical Sites
This text is designed to introduce students of the Bible to the archaeology, geography, and history of many of the important sites of the Old and New Testament worlds. Many of these sites were centers for trade, religion, defense, culture, industry, and government. DeVries details the development of significant sites from villages and towns to cities, based on how the site could meet the essential needs of the people. The availability of water or arable land, proximity to trade routes, and easily defensible terrain were prime factors in determining a city's prominence. This study concentrates on the cities in Mesopotamia, Aram/Syria and Phoenicia, Anatolia, Egypt, and Palestine during the Old Testament period, and Palestine and the provinces of the Roman world during the New Testament period.

World history help Archaeology?
I'm doing a project and its about things that were found 100bc can anyone guess what these things could be? 2 small square objects with a thin wax coating. The objects have small spout openings with a strong smell permeating from the interior. 3 cylinder shaped metal objects small and light enough to hold in one hand. Ants are crawling inside and out of each object. 1 object with a hard paper covering, and hundreds of individual slices inside. Pictures, writings, and maps are on the slices. 1 additional hard paper covered object containing individual slices with numbers and writings on each of the slices. 1 soft crumpled paper object with a small amount of rose coloring. 5 metal objects with jagged edges secured on a small metal ring. A suggested scenario or story representing how the objects were left behind. Be thorough, logical, and creative.

Are you sure these are things that are supposed to come from 100 BC? They sound unlike any ancient artifacts with which I am familiar, though most of my experience is with much older artifacts from Egypt, Nubia, and Syria-Palestine. For example, the 3rd and 4th objects sound like books, but books as we know them were not common until a bit later than 100 BC. This sounds like creative descriptions of modern objects as part of a school exercise on how to interpret unfamiliar objects found by archaeologists. #1 - I'm not sure about, but it could be a perfume bottle or a scented candle #2 Soda cans (empty) #3 Picture book/text book/atlas #4 Text book, math book #5 Not sure - kleenex/face tissue? #6 5 keys on a key ring If I'm entirely wrong (which is entirely possible) then think about what particular cultures you have been studying recently and the types of objects they used to help you with this project. Why is archaeology important in the study of ancient world history?


History accounts for events that are politically and socially important. It accounts for dates and names and the places where those events occurred. Archaeology adds to the richness of history because it accounts for life. How it was lived. The people - not just the social and political motivators. The everydayer. It can show patterns and potential of and for change. It also adds to the historical record where written records do not exist (or are so limited as to be prone to bias - like with the demise of the Aztec, or the Maya - the archaeological record added so much more to that history than anything that was written about it). It allows pre/historians an objective view of the past. It can't be written with cultural assumptions or bias. It is what it is.
