Thinking about Space: The Potential of Surface Survey and Contextual Archaeology in the Definition of Space in Roman Times (Studies in Eastern Mediterranean Archaeology)
The incorporation of new provinces in the Roman Empire, both in the East and the West, coincides with marked changes in urban infrastructure and layout, and in rural settlement patterns, as is attested by numerous excavations and surveys. While scholars agree on the quantitative and qualitative transformation of cities and their territories, such as an increase in the number of monumental buildings and rural sites, a significantly higher degree of urbanization, a more sophisticated lifestyle etc., little research has been devoted to the ways in which these structures and sites, and their internal components, were organized spatially. The eleven papers presented in this volume result from workshops organized by the international, interdisciplinary ROCT-network (Roman Crafts and Trade). From a heterogeneous chronological and geographical background, the peer-reviewed collection of papers focuses on one central issue: the use of space in the Roman world.

Could an introduction include definition of terms used throughout your essay?
My introduction has the definitions of important terms used throughout my Archaeology essay. Is it right to put it in the introduction?

That depends on how many terms you will be using specifically. If you are going to be discussing a few key terms (like 1 - 3 terms), it might be a good idea to describe in minute detail what they are, then go into more detail in the body of the essay. If you are going to be using a lot of terms, I would define them as I mention them, by working their meanings into the body of the essay.

Archaeology help- definitions, preservation and preparation?
I am doing an Archaeology self taught course and am now revising leading up to the final exam. If anyone knows anything about Archaeology i would really appreciate help, primarily concerning- context cards, what are they? methods of preservation of artifacts? preparation before a dig? thank you.

I recommend reading "archaeology - the basics" by Clive Gamble! This book won me through revision time of my degree and is an absolute bonus to the budding archaeologist. Otherwise, try Archaeology: An Introduction by Kevin Greene, another good all-rounder, explaining everything from preservation to conservation, to excavation rules, and general guidelines. Either of those should answer your queries, and more besides. (I would like to point out that I have no relation to either of those two, I'm just sharing the benefit of my experience from an archaeology degree!!) A context card is an on-site record taken during a dig. On it, you record the soil colour, texture, consistency, layers, you draw the stratigraphy (again, the layers) and any finds or stones within it. You have to record everything on site, and if you are excavating a particular area, this is your way to remember it. Often they are supported by photographs. Preparation taken before a dig (you will find more about this in Greene's book) can be looked at in several ways, from leading to participating. In leading an excavation, you will have to had: Done your desktop research, as follows - Investigated the site and come up with a research question - Applied for funding - Gathered volunteers and organised preliminary research (either fieldwalking or surveying) - Gained permission from the site owner/s and cleared it with state officials/local authorities. Also get a health and safety check in some cases! - You need to train your volunteers in techniques and what they are looking for to ensure equality when digging - Organised any publicising you wish Directly before and during the excavation itself - Prepared timelines and aims for each day - Have tools prepared, context cards at the ready and a health and safety talk done - Corner off the area - Prep your volunteer excavators - Commence digging! Preservation of artefacts is a long one and the books, and more likely online resources, will be able to offer you a longer and more thorough explanation. In simple terms, artefacts can be preserved through time through: Dry sites (where they are dried out and preserved. The Sahara would be a perfect place for dessication to take place.) Wet sites (where waterlogged sites create a stagnant area that preserves. Look at the bog bodies found in Ireland or Denmark as an example - e.g. Tollund Man) Extreme cold sites (such as Otzi, where the temperatures are too low for bacteria to develop and the decomposition process to occur properly) Archaeologists can preserve artefacts through chemical solutions, tailored specifically to the artefact in kind. I recommend reading around if this is the area you need definition with - definitely investigate Greene's book, or have a look at case studies such as Otzi the Iceman (Google him, there are many case studies that can be found online) where conservation techniques have been used to a near-extreme. I hope this has given you some kind of guidance! I recommend trying articles on Antiquity through your academic institution if you fancy some tough reading on the subject, otherwise Wikipedia is remarkably useful as a starting point (with my academic achievements I probably shouldn't be saying that, but it's true - the archaeology articles tend to be rather good for a simple outline) and I definitely recommend Gamble and Greene for some easy-reading guidance! All the best. xK
